Summerland

Phew… what a summer!

I survived taking two courses during the same 6-week session – barely. Actually, I did quite well, but I would not have been able to keep that break neck pace for long. Last week I took a the entire week off work so that Katrina and I could get out of town for some much needed rest. We stayed at a great little B&B in the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania near Lake Wallenpaupack. The weather was great! I caught up on my missed sleep, read a book (for fun!), did some hiking and pretty much took it easy.

Monday was back to work as well as the start of the fall semester here. The campus is once again swarming with students. I’ll be taking two classes this fall as well: Information Systems in Libraries, and Database Management. After looking at the syllabi, the semester promises to be quite busy.

Church continues to transition. With the influx of students, quite a few new faces showed up to our BBQ/worship mtg on campus. I am continually amazed at how mature some of these undergrads are. I sure didn’t have things so together when I was in there place. Worship band rehearsal have begun as well… our first public worship was a bit rough but I’m sure things will get better.

In any case, enough about me. What is this, a blog or something?

International Aisle

I like walking down the international aisle at the grocery store… you can find some interesting things. Lately I sampled a couple of Korean drinks:

Milkis soda

Milk soda! As odd as it sounds it was actually okay. The label states, “New feeling of soda beverage” and “Fantastic feel!”

But my new favorite is:

Aloe juice drinkAloe juice dring

Aloe Vera juice! It is very refreashing and tastes kind of like melon or white grape juice and it has tasty aloe bits floating in it. I’ve grown so attached to it that my wife has taken to buying 1-liter bottles for me when she goes shopping!

Happy Bday, Netscape

Ten years ago this week Netscape went public. This introduced the general public to the web, and the world was never the same again.

The Belfast Telegraph has an article today titled “Ten Years of the Net” in which they summarize big internet related events. While Anglo-centric, it was fun to read and remember what I was doing back then. I think my first introduction to the web came in a conversation with a cousin who’s father worked for Hewlett-Packard. He was describing CompuServe and I have to admit, I was puzzled. I was already familiar with computer networks from my time at an Apple grant school in junior high, but networking over phone lines? That was the realm of the military and sci-fi movies.

I believe 1996 was the year my family subscribed to AOL (14.4k modem I think?) and it was all over after that. Surfing Yahoo for house-rules for a strategy game I played with my high school buddies and chatting online was the order of the day. In 1997 my father and I were a couple of the 46 million hits on NASA’s website when Pathfinder sent pictures back from Mars. Later that year I also began my foray into building websites and HTML. My first website (hosted on Geocities) was dedicated to the Sega Genesis.

A few months ago a flash video popped up in the blogosphere called “EPIC 2015.” It is a fake documentary set in the future when Google and Amazon merge and take over the world. Very slick. You can get it here.
